" News should be fresh...it should be random." -the founder of randomnewz.
Paper, a
standalone iOS app was launched today. The objective of the app is to provide
curated and higher quality content in the myriad of news we get online. While Facebook
is trying to solve this content worry on an app, Ekwoge Fritz of FeePerfect,
the African tech company run right, has built Randomnewz.
It is a
news aggregator that brings to you the latest local, tech, entertainment,
sports, health news. He let the world know about the new site in December with
his tweet. For now, it supports content from Cameroon, Kenya, Ghana and
Nigeria.
“I am a
news junkie. While trying to get news on my community, I discovered that I’d
have to go to many …many sites in order to get news on topics that interest me.
Or worse, sometimes, I am stuck reading only on tech or only on fashion.”
So, Fritz
made this crawler primarily for personal reasons. He adds the sites to be crawled manually and seeks the best content: blogs,
news sites, etc. from local sources on the topics.
Being a
month old, the site is constantly being revamped and he intends (of course) to
add more countries and topics.
“There is
this level of serendipity in news which I admire and will like to promote with
randomnewz. News should be random….and fresh.”
You now
know where the name came from. The site is different from regular crawlers in
some ways:
1. It does not crawl through each and
every link- just the first page of the news site.
2. The pictures of the original website
are not used.
Randomnewz
keeps the news fresh and simply redirects to the source…did somebody say
Google?
Anyway, the
site will be seeing some changes in the coming weeks.
